"NORUZ" The Persian New Year

"NORUZ" The Persian New Year The word "Noruz" (also spelled "Norooz", "Norouz" or "Nowruz") is a compound of two Persian words, "now" which has the same etymology as the English word "new" and means new, and the word "ruz" which means both "day" and "time." Literally meaning the "new day", it is usually translated as the "New Year".

Noruz 1387 will occur MARCH 20, 2008 at 1:50 AM EST (Eastern Standard Time) or at 5:50 AM UTC (Coordinated Universal Time - Greenwich, England), at the exact moment of the vernal equinox when spring begins in the Northern Hemisphere and autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. At this global moment, night and day are equal all over the world, the sun sets at the South Pole and rises at the North Pole and anyone standing on the equator at noon will not cast a shadow. A day of equilibrium when differences are to be forgotten and nature's renewal celebrated by all.
